WEEK 5 @ USYD MTEACH

WEEK 5 @ USYD MTEACH

Today was really interesting. In Tech we went through the world of graphic notation, Sibelius and dove into Copyright. This topic was really interesting as an educator we are constantly breaking these laws. From todays lesson I learnt that teachers and education falls into a grey area and that if we are using our resources for educating purposes only and not gaining money from i then we are safe. I already knew about APRA AMCOS from my previous studies and use there websites when I gig to make sure owners of the songs I am using are earning their money, but what I didn't know was the world of Noteflight. In our exploration of different notation applications we went through Sibelius, Noteflight and Flat io. After having a muck around with each of these applications I personally liked Noteflight over the others and especially once we got into the market place option where they are partnered with Hal Leonard and if you need to copyright an arrangement you just post it to this website and it does that for you. This then covers you for performances where tickets are sold and if they school wanted to they could buy it off the website and you make a few dollars. After going through the computer apps we went through the iPad apps and similar to the others there are also apps like Ultimate Guitar and i real pro that help to create charts and assist in learning basic songs. I personally use both of these all the time especially for gigs and creating charts. I highly recommend them.

In Extension we all had time to share what we are doing within our specialisation. Within our class we had students in Jazz, Popular Music and Composition along with us techies. It was really interesting to hear what others are doing and how they are relating it back to class. It also made me really excited to see how we could all collaborate towards the end of semester!
