EXCITING NEWS - PRIMARY SCHOOL PERCUSSION GROUP

So a few weeks ago I was approached and asked to work as a contractor in my local Primary School to teach a group percussion lesson and so far its amazing!! The kids are loving what we are doing and are really engaged in the Boomwhackers and the Steel Pan. So far we have gone through types of percussion, tuned vs untuned, played we will rock you as a group and body percussion and today we went through Fruit Rhythms. We started off the lesson by going through different groupings and giving them names e.i Watermelon, Coconut, Banana etc. and I even asked them to come up with there own! After we had gone through that I set up Rhythmic Bowling. We set up some music and played ten pin bowling (I wasn't allowed to film due to child protection) but generally you do this;

Get some water bottles and put a little bit of water and food colouring in them

Draw out a few rhythms, I did single beat, 2 quavers, semi breve, minim, rests etc just make sure they have learnt a fruit for it

Give them a ball and let them go to town knocking them over

Make sure you note down all that had been knocked down

Then try to clap that rhythm.

If you get time, repeat this but in groups and have a competition for the first group to knock over enough to create 2 full bars!

I will try to keep you updated on this!
