WEEK 7 @ USYD MTEACH
Today we had Matt Ridgway from Ableton come in and discuss what resources Ableton provides teachers and together as a class we created a Mash Up using one of the 10 week programs provided by Ableton. Firstly we were introduced to Ableton Learning Music and within that we went through and critically discussed what was good and what could be improved. The website is basically a crash course in learning the basics of music. The topics include the following:
These topics are really cool and within the lessons they have interactive areas where students can experiment to reinforce the idea. The on thing we all agree on as a class is that it was really wordy. If they could change it to include more videos or games, it might hold more students interest.
After going through this Mike took us through the classroom support projects that Ableton have created to assist teachers in creating programs that are based around Ableton Live and creating digital music. As a class we went through the first lesson of the Art of a Mashup. This was really interesting as it showed us videos of mashups and have questions that encouraged students to use Campbell Engaged and Active Listening strategies. It also showed really cool videos of Ableton Push and launch pad being used to create these.
In Extension today we continued the theme of Ableton Live by having Caitlin Standford come in as speak to us about her Masters Thesis about Ableton Push and electro acoustic music using Ableton Live and its Looping Features. I found Caitlin's lecture really interesting and how she set up Push and used it within a year 10 classroom and not only saw the many different levels of students but also how differently peoples works can be. After that she showed us how she uses Ableton Live Looping system for live performances to create an electro acoustic vibe with her violin. This ranged from adding drum beat to sound effects on. her violin. Overall it was really interesting.
