WEEK 3 @ USYD

WEEK 3 @ UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY MTEACH

Today we started to get into the really fun stuff! In both Tech and Extension today we started projects - Filming and Unreliable Advertisements.

In tech we were asked to split into groups and hand out roles. In my case I had Director, Audio Engineer, 2 Camera Operators and then the act which included a harpsichord, viola de gambe and myself singing. Before we did anything we had to get our equipment which involved a film camera, audio interface, dynamic microphone, XLR cable, headphones and lighting equipment. After being separated into our groups one student had access to the historical room in the Conservatorium so we went inside there. From there we knew er were going to do 'Summertime' but didn't know how to arrange it. Eventually we thought taking a Jazz standard and mixing it with Baroque and Classical instruments would be really cool so we set ourselves up with the following (based on the picture below);

- 3 Camera angles which consisted of 2 phones and one professional film camera (one stable and capturing all of us) (one facing the harpsichord) (one zoomed in on the viola)

- Direct lighting from a spotlight and blue hue from the posters around the room

- Audio Interface picking up 2 microphones - a condenser between the harpsichord and dynamic for myself (this took a bit of experimenting to find the perfect balance)

After a few takes we created an arrangement which included a solo for the viola de gambe and changes to the dynamics, texture and feel between a half and full time.

For extension we started by going through the project brief an examples from James classes. After pairing up my group (Vicky and Sophie) decided we were going to do an unreliable ad about the Conservatorium. Again using the Baroque instruments we decided to perform Canon in D but make it progressively get worse. We thought that this would contrast the high standards Conservatorium students play at and make it contrast the rating the university gets given. First off we changed the Canon to the key of G meaning we were figuring out how to play it while recording it. We were also using Ableton which as a Logic user was finding it very difficult. Eventually we had an amazing recording which consisted of recorder breaks, bad harpsichord playing and out of tune viola de game. Over the week we came up with ideas for the script we were going to record the following lesson.

As these both are projects that go over two weeks we uploaded everything to a shared folder to edit next week.
